IT Officials Interrogate Director Saran

'News' spread in Kollywood that the Income Tax officials raided the residences and offices of MDMK leader and leading film producer Kalaipuli Thanu and director Saran yesterday. However they clarified that there was no such raid held in Thanu's house. They had only enquired of some details from director Saran. But some sources hint that there are chances for a full-fledged raid in Kollywood soon with film personalities including Thanu expecting such raids.

Thanu, popularly known as 'Kalaipuli' Thanu, has produced more than 40 films in the past 30 years in Tamil Film Industry. He was closely associated with the DMK Party in the 80's. When Vaiko was expelled from DMK, Thanu also quit from the party and joined hands with Vaiko to start a new party in the name of MDMK. Thanu is an important leader in the MDMK party always by the side of Vaiko. Financially he helps the party and even gave his residence for the party to establish an office. Thanu owns two production companies - Kalaipuli International Pvt Ltd and V Creations.

There is a prolonged dispute between Thanu and Sun TV. Though Thanu is a leading producer, he does not give the satellite rights to Sun TV. The Channel wanted to get the rights of Thanu's blockbuster Kakka Kakka, a few years before and Thanu offered one more film Punnagai Poove along with it as a combo offer. But Sun TV rejected that one and adamantly demanded for Kakka Kakka alone. An annoyed Thanu sold the film to Sun's archrival Jaya TV for a hefty profit. That time though DMK was not in power politically Thanu's Party MDMK was a DMK ally only. Now the political scenario has changed with the DMK in power both at the Center and the State. And the party considers Thanu as its adversary bringing to mind issues related to Vaiko. Therein one can easily make out the real politics behind the Income Tax raids.

When we contacted Thanu late in the evening, he said, "Till now no such raid has happened and there is nothing in my places to raid. I am ready to face anything... I have already experienced many crises. In fact I always expect these kind of things."

The Income Tax officials also conducted enquiries at director cum producer Saran's house at Alwarpet and Nungambakkam office. The officials reported that Saran did not show the details regarding the business of his recent films Aaru, Vattaram and Muni. Recently Saran started a production company 'Gemini Productions' and produced the above said films. His latest one Muni with Ragavendra Lawrence and Raj Kiran created much hype and is reported to have done well.
