Patriotic feelings in Indian cinema has made people realise about the hardship that the freedom fighters went through in order to free India from the colonial rule. Stories of our freedom struggle paved way to many films in Indian cinema.

During Pre-Independence, freedom fighters created awareness among Indians by doing street play, dramas, public gatherings and festivals.

The Tamil film industry has given several interesting movies which spread the message of patriotism. From 1939-2013, Kollywood has highlighted struggle of freedom fighters in many movies. Patriotism kick-started in Tamil movies with the film Mathrubhumi, which was released in 1939, starring TS Santhanam. It was directed by HM Reddy.

There are few movies in Tamil that evoked patriotism in the minds of audience. They were whole heartedly accepted by the audience. Patriotism has become one of the most popular theme in Tamil cinema since earlier days. These movies revolve around the struggles faced by India in the past and present.

Few Tamil movies which talks about patriotism were made in Bollywood. Action King Arjun Sarjha starrer Mudhalvan was made in Hindi as Nayak, which became a Blockbuster hit. The movie had Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee and Amrish Puri in the lead roles.

Patriotic movies which were made in Tamil like Kamal starrer Indian was dubbed in Hindi as Hindustan, Mani Ratnam's Roja and Bombay was dubbed to Hindi with the same name.

Thyagabhoomi (Land of Sacrifice) had KJ Mahadevan and SD Subbalakshmi in lead roles. The flick was directed by K Subramanyam, the plot glorified Mahatma Gandhi and his ideals, and the movie was released in the year 1939.

Veerapandiya Kattabomman was released in the year 1959 starring Shivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, Padmini, Varalakshmi and Ramaswamy in the lead. The plot deals with the story of a Tamil King who rebels against thd East India Company.

The movie was released in 1961, which had Sivaji Ganeshan and Gemini Ganeshan play the lead roles. They try to free India from the clutches of the British. After repeated failures they are sent to jail and their struggle remain incomplete.

Indian, which is an all time best patriotic movie, had Kamal Hassan playing dual role as father and son. Along with Kamal Hassan the movie had Urmila Matondkar, Manisha Koirala and Suganya in the lead castes. The plot deals with the life of a freedom fighter who kills his son when he comes to know that he is corrupted.

Roja released in 1992, was directed by Mani Ratnam. It featured Aravind Samy in the lead role. This is about a person who is sent to Kashmir border for his official work. In this short period of time, the actor gets kidnapped by a group of terrorists and is tortured in many ways.

The story deals with the life of a photographer who is pulled into politics by the ruling leader Raghuvaran.

Kamraj

A Tamil biographical film which was released in 2004. The plot of the film deals with the life of K Kamaraj who was considered as the king maker in late 1960s. The movie is based on the life of Kamaraj's childhood, growth as politician and his prison life in Freedom struggle.

Bombay

Bombay

The movie had Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles. It was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film revolves around the controversy surrounding the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, its subsequent demolition on 6 December, 1992, and increased religious tensions in the city of Mumbai that led to the Bombay riots.
