Cine halls in Tamil Nadu is getting decked up for the releases of Vijay's Jilla and Ajith Kumar's Veeram. Posters of the movies are being pasted in every nook and corner of the state to reach the maximum. The Pongal festive mood in the state and among Tamil cine-goers all across the world will begin early this year with these flicks hitting the screens this Friday (January 10).
What would be the ideal time to watch a movie? For other industries reasons may vary, but for Tamil film industry, Pongal festive time has been the perfect time for the releases. So, filmmakers here do their best to release their films for Sankranthi. It is because turn out in theatres will be very high and producers try to cash in on this occasion.
It is a wonderful time for Tamil audience as there are two big movies that are releasing simultaneously for Pongal. But for the fans of Vijay and Ajith Kumar, it is more than a festive season.
They want their favourite stars' film to be break records and win the Pongal race. More importantly, the fans want their hero to beat each other's records. This has also lead to wars among the fans on social networking sites.
Other Side Of The Clash
The simultaneous releases may have made cine-goers and respective fans happy, but the other side of the story is that it is affecting the industry! All the sectors that are involved in the movie releases are facing the heat of this battle at Box Office.
A popular saying in the industry is that there is always room for two movies during a festive time. But industry watchers say that it doesn't apply for two biggies.
The Clash Of Titans
This time, the battle is tough because Vijay's movie is directly taking on Ajith's film. After a long time, their films are clashing at the Box Office. Starting from distributors to exhibitors, all are worried about this development.
Distributors Cautious This Time
It was evident with distributors refusing to quote fancy amounts for theatrical rights of different regions. They were cautious about the clash, which could eat each other's business at collection centres.
How Would It Affect Each Others' Films?
Fans, no matter what, will watch their respective hero's films. But it is not the same case for general audience, as they will be choosy. When they have options, they will definitely try to pick the best one that has got good word of mouth.
A Theatre Owner Speaks
Theatres had hard time in allocating screens for Veeram and Jilla. A theatre owner says, "If they had avoided the clash, all sections including fans would have been happy. The simultaneous releases will not have the benefits that a big solo will enjoy. Simple bad word-of-mouth could play spoilsport when people have options."
Has Producers Taken A Big Risk?
Many distributors have echoed the same thought and claim that producers have taken a big risk by having the release on the same day. The initial hype will guarantee a good business, but people can't expect the long runs in theatres, believes a theatre owner in Karnataka. If a movie gets released without a competition and gets decent response, people will watch it without any hesitation. But not when they have two options, he concludes.
Kollywood Different From Bollywood!
A trader, on the condition of anonymity, says, "In Bollywood, production houses ensure not to release two A-list stars' films at the same time. But here we don't have such unwritten rules and fight to have an upper hand over each other."
Lessons Waiting To Be Learnt!
Some of them feel that it is an expensive risk, which could teach a lesson or two for the industry for not avoiding the battle.
Jilla stars Vijay and Mohanlal in the lead roles. It is directed by Nesan and produced by RB Choudhary. Kajal Aggarwal is the female lead of the film.
