10 Tamil Actors/Actresses Who Are Also Playback Singers!

When Tamil cinema was being recognized back in the late 1920s and early 1930s, there were this handful of performers who could act as well as sing; MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, NS Krishnan, PU Chinnappa to name a few.

The trend faded away when personalities like MGR and Sivaji Ganesan took over the reigns in the mid 1950s and 60s. However, life is a cycle and what goes around must come around.

Bringing the trend back to Kollywood are these below mentioned celebrities who can act and sing all by themselves, so much so that they can even frighten some of the top rated playback singers Tamil cinema has today.

While such talented personalities have existed in Kollywood right throughout, it is most recently the trend has once again taken shape with many upcoming and established actors taking to singing.

Though most of them haven't yet proved that they can sing even classical numbers like professionals, they often choose their songs well in order to entertain their fans and movie goers alike.

Kamal Haasan

Kamal is multi-talented and is familiar with most of the things if not all when it comes to cinema. He has served as an inspiration to many upcoming actors and singers alike.


Ilayathalapathy Vijay recorded his first Tamil song in the year 1994 for the movie Rasigan. The number 'Bombay City Sukkha Rotti' was composed by Deva. Since then, he has not turned back and has established himself as a play back singer.


Dhanush has probably inspired hundreds of actors to take up singing, thanks to the success of 'Kolaveri Di'. But the actor has been singing from 2004 when he recorded his first song 'Naattu Sarakku' in the film Pudhukottaiyilirundhu Saravanan.

Shruti Haasan

Shruti Haasan is a musician by profession. She ventured into cinema only after learning music at the Musicians Institute in California. She is a singer and also a music composer.

Andrea Jeremiah

Andrea is a multi-faceted actress. She is a musician and a dancer better known for her playback singing and acting abilities.


Simbu too is a multi-talented actor. He can sing, write lyrics, dance, direct a film and can do much more when it comes to cinema. His first song was 'Mullaaga Kuththakkodaathu' in the film Sonnal Thaan Kaadhala which had its music composed by his father, T.R, who is yet another multi-talented personality.


Sivakarthikeyan has earned himself a major fan following in Tamil Nadu, thanks to his singing and dancing abilities apart from performing on screen as an actor. His first song was the title track from the film, Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.

Remya Nambeesan

Everyone knows about her acting abilities but most of you might be surprised to know that it is Remya who has sung the famous 'Fy Fy Fy Kalaachify' song in the film Pandianadu. Her first song was recorded in the year 2011 for a Malayalam movie.

Vijay Antony

While everybody else took to singing after becoming actors/actresses, Vijay Antony did the reverse. From being a successful music director and singer, he is now a successful actor.

SJ Surya

SJ Surya is the latest to join the list. Though his song 'Puthandin' is quite famous, he recorded his first song way back in the year 2007 when he sang for music composer Deva in the film Vyabari. 'July Maadathil' was his first song as a singer.
