It has been a trend in Kollywood to reuse yesteryear movie
titles for various reasons. It could be the attraction factor,
title suiting the movie's storyline or to appeal the masses.
Makers generally reuse titles of star heroes to work out magic
and gain some instant publicity for the movie and the most used
titles are that of Superstar Rajinikanth's yesteryear
Dhanush, Superstar's 'mappillai' in real life reprocessed titles
such as Polladhavan, Padikathavan and Mapillai
for his movies. Karthi Sivakumar too, took his share by seeking
Naan Mahan Alla and Alex Pandiyan (an evergreen
character's name from the movie Moondru Mugam).
Siva Karthikeyan's upcoming movie too, banks upon the legendary
star's yesteryear title, Velaikaran while Raghava Lawrence had got
hold on the 1988 blockbuster movie's title, Rajadhi Raja.
Few movies struck gold while few fizzled at the box office, but
the buzz which these movies created before its release were worth
mentioning and thanks to their respective title.
The latest buzz is that the upcoming movie of Vijay-Atlee combo
has won a title for themselves which is powerful and strikes
instant intensity. The duo's upcoming movie which is in its
production stage is in full swing and is titled as Moondru
Moondru Mugam was a 1982 blockbuster that featured
Rajinikanth in triple roles. Being faithful to the title, the movie
had Rajini in three different roles of John, Arun and Alex Pandian.
It was the brief character of Alex Pandian in the movie which
fetched numerous accolades not just during the time of the movie's
release but also at the present time.
Vijay in his upcoming movie is playing dual roles, one being set
against the backdrop of 1980s and the other being set at the
present time. One can now assume that the director might have
chalked out a third character in the movie for Vijay going by the
choice of title and the makers of the movie could possibly be
downplaying the fact in order to keep the suspense factor
Comprising of an ensemble cast of Samantha, Kajal Agarwal,
Nithya Menen and S.J Surya with the Mozart of Madras, AR Rahman
scoring music for the movie and KV Vijayendra Prasad of
BhajarangiBhaijan's fame penning the script for
the movie, it seems that the team is leaving no stones unturned to
make this venture a huge one in terms of all round aspects.
Hope the new age Moondru Mugam replicates the success
and craze as that of its older counterpart.
