Kollywood's veteran Vijayakanth, who turned politician by establishing Desiya Murupokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) breathed his last today in Chennai after he tested positive for coronavirus, reportedly. The politician was recovering from severe lung-related complications and was discharged from the hospital only a few days ago. Unfortunately, Vijayakanth had to succumb to the virus. A pall of gloom descended over the people of Tamil Nadu and Kollywood as the news broke.

Speaking to a media channel earlier in one of her candid interviews, Premalatha Vijayakanth, who is also an active politician, and general secretary-treasurer of the DMDK party talked at length about their love story.

Premalatha Vijayakanth was born in Chennai on March 18, 1969. She was married to Vijayakanth on January 31, 1990, after an arranged marriage set-up. The couple have two sons and one among them, Shanmuga Pandian is an actor.

Premalatha reminisces about the time when she first saw and met Vijayakanth in an arranged marriage set-up. She was quoted saying, "Our union is proof that marriage is made in heaven. I say this because it was true in my case. Captain Vijayakanth's family belongs to Madurai and we are based out in Vellore. We do not have any connection between our families and it was an arranged alliance.

When he came to see me, my father was instantly impressed with his attitude. He thought if he wanted to give away his daughter, let it be to this man. He came across as a simple man and not like a hero then. When he came to our house for matchmaking, he was clad in saffron robes and without footwear. He is spiritual and is a frequent to Sabarimala. By then, my parents do not know what is the life of an actor and how it is going to be but they are fixated on him as their son-in-law."

Vijayakanth was born in Madurai on August 25, 1952. After making it big in the Kollywood film industry, Vijayakanth was referred to as Captain fondly by his fans. His other monickers are Karuppu MGR and Puratchi Kalaignar.
