Balaji Telefilms' much awaited tele serial Karam Apna Apna has started to go on air since September 6th, 2006 on Star Plus at 9:30 pm. The serial's popularity till date shows the accomplishment of Ekta kapoor on the realm of soap operas. As in her previous endeavors, Ekta's concern for women protagonists is seen in Karam Apna Apna also. The protagonist Gouri is (Pallavi Subhash) the centre, around whom the story revolves.

The foremost glory for the success of the serial goes to none other than Ekta Kapoor. She puts up an interesting line up of seasonal actors juxtaposed with fresh artists in Karam Apna Apna. She keeps up with her inclination to introduce new faces, by bringing in Pallavi Subhash in the protagonist's role. Ekta found out Pallavi in a minor role in Tumara Disha. She is been touted to attain the iconic status gained by her forerunners. Aparna Mehta reenters the serial in the role of Krishna Kapoor or 'dadi', after the death of her character, Savita Irani, in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.Ekta Kapoor's standard lady villain character is enacted by Geetanjali Tikekar, as Maya, in Karam Apna Apna. The major appearance among the casts is that of Roopa Ganguly, who had last appeared as 'Draupati' in the historical 'Mahabharatha'. Ekta Kapoor introduces another new face Shriya Bsisht, from the corporate world in this serial.

Among the male crew of the serial, there are quite new faces as well as the well familiar faces. Mohammad Iqbal Khan acts as the key character Shiv in Karam Apna Apna. Balaji's steadfast actor Sumeet Sachdev enacts the role of Sashank in Karam Apna Apna. The cricketer turned actor Salil Ankola makes his maiden appearance in this serial in the role of Mahen Kapoor. The most recognized villain of Balaji telefilms, Rajev Paul, makes his entry to the positive role, pairing opposite his own wife Delnaaz.Karan Patel acts out his seventh character Vivian Kapoor, with Balaji Telefilms in Karam Apna Apna.Rahul Jagtiani from his modeling field and Kiran Kapoor from his film field make their appearance in this soap opera.

Ekta selects a strong and well-sketched story line for Karam Apna Apna. The plot of the serial is set in Kolkatta. The story revolves round the simple, middle class and non-ambitious, Kolkatta girl Gouri (Pallavi Subhash). She binds the three reputed families, the Chatterjees- her paternal home, the Kapoors- her future in- laws and the Tandons- friend of Kapoor. She anticipates a strong family life with her husband and kids. The dream gets shattered on the eve of her wedding with Sashank (Sumeet Sachdev), as she gets disgraced in the eyes of the World by some wicked plot. Now Gouri has to tread through the unbeaten paths she had never dreamt off.

The screenplay of the serial is done quite well by Mahesh Pande and Anirudh Pathak. The scenes during the Durga Puja and he wedding will attract anyone to sit and watch this soap opera. Anil V Kumar's direction is excellent and the story moves without unnecessary dragging. Brijmohan deserves all the recognition for the editing and powerful dialogues. Ekta's bias towards women is shown through his dialogues as Gouri's father asks, "Why only women have to sacrifice their own homes for marriage?" The costume designing is up to the mark as in Ekta's serials and the title song is melodious.

As a whole Ekta's Karam Apna Apna is a simple and identifiable story. It is a coming back to reality stories for Ekta who had been accused of distancing herself from reality in her recent shows. This full-on Balaji entertainment will surely attract the family audience with the wonderful performance of Pallavi Subhash and Mohammad Iqbal Khan.
