Shaakuntalam OTT Date & Release: Samantha's Flop Mythological Love Saga Will Stream From May 19 On Prime Video

Samantha Ruth Prabhu's latest periodic fantasy drama, a classical love story from playwright Kalidasa's 'Abhignana Shaakuntalam,' titled 'Shaakuntalam,' hit the screens amid a decent buzz on April 14.

The movie was made as a pan-India venture and was released in five languages across India. Samantha played the titular role in the film directed by Gunasekhar. He also wrote the film's screenplay. However, Shaakuntalam failed to reach the expectations of viewers, regular film buffs, and fans of the actress.

Shaakuntalam did an underwhelming pre-release business when compared to other such films, for the budget that it was made on. Both the producers-Gunaa Teamworks and Sri Venkateswara Creations are known for making films on whopping budgets. They have spent more than what was earlier decided on, owing to the story and its time period. Also, it is a risk that they took to invest the amount in Samantha alone.

Initially, there were reports about Shaakuntalam not having any buyers. The non-theatrical rights took a great time and effort to get sold. The OTT giant Amazon Prime Video has bagged the digital streaming rights of the Gunasekhar movie. Since the movie has been not doing well, it might hit the OTT space earlier than expected.

In continuation, Shaakuntalam will be made available for streaming online from the second week of May. The official information was announced and on May 19, the movie will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video in all languages it was first released in.

While Samantha is portraying the character of Shakuntala, Malayalam actor Dev Mohan is cast as Dushyanta. Sachin Khedekar played Kanva Maharishi and Mohan Babu as Durvasa Maharishi. Aditi Balan and Ananya Nagalla are seen as Priyamvada and Anasuya. Prakash Raj, Gautami, Madhoo, Kabir Bedi, Jisshu Sengupta, Kabir Duhan Singh, Varshini Sounderajan, Harish Uthaman, Subbaraju, and Aadarsh Balakrishna played important roles. Allu Arha played an important cameo in the role of Prince Bharatha. She made her acting debut.
