Oscar Awards are considered as the greatest achievement of World cinema. It is a prestigious award that recognizes personalities with their excellence in cinematic achievements in the film industry. Every year, Indian sends an official entry to the event, from different categories. Indian Movies like Lagaan, Salaam Bombay were nominated for the awards. But there is no Indian movie has won an Oscar award yet. On other hand, many talented artists who have made us proud on the event. Ahead of Oscar 2023, let's have a look at notable Indian who have won Oscars.

Bhanu Athaiya

Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to win an Oscar Awards. She was one of the popular costume desingers in Indian film industry, who have worked morethan 100 films. Athaiya won her Oscar award in 1983 for the film 'Gandhi'. She worked for many  national awards films like Swades, Lagaan, Lekin and Lady In Repose. Apart from Indian film industry, she made her great contribution to Hollywood also. Athaiya was passed away in 2020.

 

Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray was one of the finest directors of Indian and Bengali film industry for best known for his films like Pather Panchali, Charulata, Mahanagar and Sonar Kella. He is an inspiration to many filmmakers around the world. He won the Oscar awards in year 1992, for his great contribution to Indian Cinema. He is the only Indian who honoured with an Academy Honorary Award.Ray passed away on April 23, less than a month after the Oscar ceremony.

A.R Rahman

Composer-singer AR Rahman is a musical genius who needs no introduction. Rahman is considered as  one of the great musicians across the world. He is not only a musician but also songwriter, and producer. He made great contribution to Indian Cinema especially in the languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi. A.R.Rahman was the first Indian to win to Academy awards. He won the awards for Best Original Song category for the smash hit song 'Jai Ho' in the film 'Slumdog Millionaire(2008).

Gulzar

Gulzar is an Indian poet, author, lyricist, film director and also best known for his works in Hindi film industry. He wrote the lyrics for many films like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Maachis, Chupke Chupke, and Angoor. Gulzar has won numerous awards for his great contribution to Indian film industry. Gulzar shared the Best Original Song trophy with Rahman, for Best Original Song for 'Jai Ho' at the 81st Academy Awards.

 

Resul Pookutty

Resul Pookutty received the award for his work in the Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire.  Pookutty won the award for Best Sound Mixing at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. He won the award along with Ian Toop and Richard Pryke.
