Epstein Files Controversy: Anurag Kashyap Named As 'Bollywood Guy' In Epstein's Records? Filmmaker RESPONDS -
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has firmly rejected any link to Jeffrey Epstein after references to Kashyap appeared in email chains about possible speakers for an event in China. Kashyap said there was never any meeting, contact, or participation in activities connected to Epstein, and no suggestion of wrongdoing against Kashyap has surfaced.

The mention triggered a wave of online debate in India once social media users highlighted Kashyap's name in the newly released Epstein-related material. Kashyap then addressed the issue publicly, stressing that the reference seemed to come from routine invitation lists that often circulate among global institutions and organisers.

The controversy stems from a large release of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein, the late American financier convicted of sex offences who died in 2019. The fresh set of material includes thousands of emails involving well-known personalities from politics, academia, business, entertainment, and other influential sectors worldwide.
Within these communications, Kashyap was reportedly discussed in emails about a proposed gathering in China, where organisers explored potential invitees. The emails allegedly described Kashyap as a "Bollywood guy" or a "famous Bollywood director" who might be invited to deliver a talk at the event, alongside other global figures.
Kashyap spoke about the issue during a conversation on the show Sit with Hitlist. Referring to how the name came up in the material, Kashyap said, "In a mail. In a random mail... We get invitations from Harvard, Yale, everywhere. I don't know. I have never been to Beijing. I have been to Shanghai in China once before 2014, I played recce in Bombay."
Investigative material collectively called the Epstein files covers millions of pages, including legal documents, internal records, and email exchanges linked to several probes and civil suits. These disclosures regularly draw global attention because they contain references to many public figures, though not all mentions suggest personal contact or illegal activity.
In Kashyap's situation, available information does not show any meeting with Epstein, participation in Epstein-related events, or involvement in criminal conduct. Kashyap has said the appearance of the name looks like part of routine coordination for international conferences, which often list several possible guests who may never actually attend.
While reflecting on being grouped with names found in the Epstein files, Kashyap quipped that the experience sometimes feels surreal. Kashyap joked that sometimes he thinks to himself, "Wow! What a company I have." The filmmaker added that such mentions do not always reflect real-life links, but can still fuel controversy.
During the same Sit with Hitlist interaction, Kashyap also revisited the Income Tax raid conducted at the filmmaker's residence in 2021. Kashyap said that the action mainly related to Phantom Films, the now-dissolved production banner co-founded by Kashyap. "Because we got out and we split, and the valuation. What was there? What wasn't there? Who has it? Who doesn't have it? All that kind of thing happened," Anurag Kashyap said.
For now, the documents only show Kashyap's name inside email discussions about a possible appearance at an event in China, with no proof of further contact. Kashyap's consistent statement, backed by the absence of evidence of meetings or travel linked to Epstein, places the filmmaker's role in the controversy as limited to a passing reference in email correspondence.
