Biggest Box Office Clashes On Independence Day: Independence Day is one of the biggest events in India which is celebrated with a lot of zeal and fervour. And while the entire nation looks forward to the Independence day celebrations every year, it is an important day for the box office as well. After all, each year sees a big movie hitting the theatres on the occasion of Independence and making waves at the box office. Interestingly, the Independence Day 2024 is quite special as India is not only celebrating its 78th Independence Day but the Indian box office is having a massive clash.

For the uninitiated, much talked about films Stree 2 (starring Rajkummar Rao & Shraddha Kapoor), Vedaa (starring John Abraham and Sharvari) and Khel Khel Mein (starring Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Ammy Virk etc) are all set to lock horns on Independence Day 2024. And while the box office is all set to go for a roll, this isn't the first time the box office is witnessing a clash on Independence day. Here's a look at big Independence day box office clashes in a decade (2014-2024).

Rustom vs Mohenjo Daro In 2016

Akshay Kumar's Rustom, which was a crime thriller, witnessed a box office clash with Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro which was a period action drama in 2016. While the movies managed to grab a lot of attention, Rustom managed to win millions of hearts while Mohenjo Daro received an average response. Interestingly, Rustom had also won the box office game with an opening day collection of Rs 14.11 croes while Mohenjo Daro raked in Rs 8.90 crores on its day of release.

Gold vs Satyameva Jayate In 2018

Akshay Kumar witnessed his first box office clash with John Abraham in 2018 after Gold clashed with Satyameva Jayate. To note, Gold was based on the journey of India's national hockey team to the 1948 Summer Olympics and Satyameva Jayate is a vigilante action film and also featured Manoj Bajpayee. Akshay's Gold managed to beat Satyameva Jayate at the box office. While Gold minted Rs 25.25 crores on day 1, Satyameva Jayate earned Rs 20.52 crores on its day of release.

Mission Mangal vs Batla House In 2019

Akshay Kumar and John Abraham once again locked horns in 2019 as Mission Mangal clashed with Batla House. For the uninitiated, Mission Mangal, which also featured Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu etc, is loosely based on the life of scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation who contributed to India's first interplanetary expedition Mars Orbiter Mission. The movie earned Rs 29.16 crores on its opening day. On the other hand, Batla House is an action thriller helmed by Nikkhil Advani and is inspired by the Batla House encounter case that took place on 19 September 2008. The movie raked in Rs 15.55 crores

Raksha Bandhan vs Laal Singh Chadha In 2022

Post the pandemic, Akshay's Raksha Bandhan had a box office clash with Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chadha. To note, Raksha Bandhan was a family comedy drama helmed by Aanand L Rai and received average reviews with an opening day collection of Rs 8.2 crores. On the other hand, Laal Singh Chadha was the official Bollywood remake of American film Forrest Gump and made an earning of Rs 11.7crores on its day of release despite mixed reviews

OMG 2 vs Gadar 2 In 2023

Akshay Kumar's much talked about OMG 2, also starring Pankaj Tripathi, witnessed a box office clash with Sunny Deol's Gadar 2. However, despite good reviews, OMG 2 failed to beat Gadar 2 at the box office. While OMG 2 minted just Rs 10.26 crores. Gadar 2 created history and recorded the highest collection for Independence day release as it minted Rs 40.14 crores.

It's worth a mention that Akshay is having his 7th Independence Day box office clash of his career and so far he has emerged victorious in all clashes except two wherein Raksha Bandhan and OMG 2 lost the box office battle. It will be interesting to see who will win the box office battle on Independence Day 2024.
