Year Ender 2024: Pushpa 2 Tsunami To Re-Releases Creating Magic; Here's A Look At Box Office Report

In 2024, the Indian film industry saw a stark contrast between Bollywood and South Indian cinema. Bollywood films largely stuck to traditional action and drama themes but struggled at the box office. In contrast, Telugu films like 'Pushpa 2' and 'Kalki 2898 AD' achieved significant success. Despite re-releasing classics like 'Laila Majnu' and 'Veer Zara', Bollywood couldn't match the numbers of previous years.

Allu Arjun's 'Pushpa 2', released on December 5, was a standout success, earning Rs 700 crore in Hindi alone and over Rs 1700 crore globally. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal highlighted the importance of such successes for the Indian film industry, stating, "Making an entertaining film and making it a big success is not an easy thing. It requires a lot of patience and many other factors. It is a magic recipe and no one knows its formula."

Box Office Performance: A Tale of Two Industries

The year was notably different from 2023 when Bollywood delivered four blockbusters like 'Pathan' and 'Jawaan', each surpassing Rs 1,000 crore worldwide. This year, only 'Stree 2', a horror comedy, managed to earn Rs 597 crore, making it Bollywood's biggest hit of the year. Analysts noted that compared to last year's hits, this year was less successful for Hindi cinema.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh commented on the situation and told Zee News Hindi, "I would not call it a bad year for Bollywood, but if you compare it with last year when our four films crossed the Rs 400 crore mark at the box office, then it will be called a bad year. Except for 'Stree 2' and the Telugu film 'Pushpa 2', this year was not that good."

Challenges Facing Hindi Cinema

Amit Sharma from Mirage Entertainment Limited described 2024 as disastrous for Hindi cinema with business down by at least 30% compared to 2023. Films like Ajay Devgan's 'Singham Again' did well with Rs 247 crore earnings but fell short of blockbuster status. Other anticipated releases like Siddharth Malhotra's 'Yodha' and Akshay Kumar's 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' also underperformed.

The trend continued with smaller budget films outperforming expectations. Medium-budget movies such as 'Shaitan', starring Devgn and R Madhavan, grossed Rs 148 crore unexpectedly. The comedy film 'Crew', featuring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Tabu, and Kriti Sanon earned Rs 89 crore, nearly doubling its production cost.

Re-releases Attempt to Revive Interest

To attract audiences back to theatres, several classic films were re-released including Shah Rukh Khan's hits like 'Karan Arjun'. Anurag Kashyap's cult favourite 'Gangs of Wasseypur' also returned to screens alongside Salman Khan's early works such as 'Maine Pyar Kiya'. However, these efforts had limited impact on overall box office figures.

Actor Manoj Bajpayee acknowledged that Hindi cinema is experiencing a downturn partly due to rising ticket prices deterring audiences from visiting theatres in large numbers. Despite these challenges, some re-releases like Imtiaz Ali’s 'Laila Majnu’ found favour among viewers.

The contrasting fortunes of Bollywood and South Indian cinema in 2024 highlight shifting audience preferences. While South Indian films thrived with fresh content and strong performances, Bollywood struggled to replicate past successes despite relying on tried-and-tested formulas.
