Maa Box Office Collection Day 1: Kajol is all over the headlines today and rightfully so. After all, her much talked about horror drama Maa has finally hit the screens and opened to mixed reviews. Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is a myhthological horror drama and has been one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The movie marks Kajol's debut in the horror genre and also features her in the titular role along with Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in key roles.

For the uninitiated, Maa is the new addition to Ajay Devgn's Shaitaan universe. To note, Maa revolves around a mother and daughter who visit their hometown only to get trapped in a demonic curse which puts the young girl's life at risk. It talks about a mother's determination to go to any strength to save her child. Interestingly, Maa has opened to mixed reviews from the audience despite massive buzz.

According to a report published in Sacnilk, Maa has made a collection of Rs 4.5 crores on day 1 (first Friday) and seems to be overshadowed by Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par.

Maa Fails To Beat Sitaare Zameen Par

Interestingly, as Maa has been facing frequent comparisons with Sitaare Zameen Par, this Kajol starrer has failed to beat Aamir's sports comedy drama and minted less than half of the latter.

Meanwhile, talking about Maa, Kajol told Khaleej Times, "I'm super proud, super excited. We've worked very hard on this film. And Maa - that word - it's universal. Across every language, every culture, the feeling is the same: a mother's instinct to protect her child, no matter what". In another interview, Maa is based on one of her favourite stories the tale of Kali Ma and Raktabija. "Somewhere we felt like we were doing the right thing. We felt like we were being guided on a path, being pushed in a direction we wanted to go in," she told Zoom.
