With Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan wedding in the offing and the innumerable saas-bahu sagas percolating the small screen a question is popping up in every mind. Celebrities can never shun the limelight, till they embark upon a complete cut-off from the public gaze. The public is all-agog to garner comments whether Aishwarya will be 'the ideal Bachchan bahu' conforming to the family norms and traditions.
Amitabh and Jaya hail from well-accomplished families with an obvious claim to Bollywood royalty. They have touched the pinnacle of success but remained rooted to their tradition with steadfastly adhering to their middle class values. Aishwarya on the other hand does not have a rich family lineage to boast of, her success rests merely on her accomplishments. As a modern day self-made woman she exhibits the airs of an individual with a strong independent streak and an opinion of her own. Rai has never acknowledged her partners and have had an upper hand in her love relations silencing her partners whenever they laid bare their viewpoints. Whether that would lead to an obvious internal family politics is one that needs to be taken care of. To worsen the situation a little more, Mamma Jaya intensely protective of her Baby B harps on discipline and politesse in the household. Whether the saas-bahu soaps will have a new lease of life in the Bachchan family is pertinent question.
Astrologers who chew over the misalignment of the planets in Ash's horoscope have further augmented the worries of the Bachchans, who have been on a pilgrimage spree, offering prayers at every shrine to annul the harmful effects. Aishwarya the dutiful daughter-in-law to be has accompanied the Bachchan family to appease the stars in their favour. It is rumoured that Jaya Bachchan was initially against the wedding, with due concern to her son's well being.
Adding fuel to the fire, the skimpy clothes and liplock scene in Dhoom 2 has left the Bachchans quite uneasy. Abhishek had expressed his discomfort to Aishwarya while she maintained a stoic silence. The Bachchans have gone further to lop off the smooching scene from the movie, depriving the audience of a titillating scene. That the scene has been cut off is not as much an issue as the fact that Aishwarya who is a celebrity both within and outside the country has actually conceded to their decision. Whether she will approve the intrusions of the Bachchan clan her domains of freedom even after marriage is a debatable issue. The media buzz is that it could be a bone of content in the family in future.
However Aishwarya who has always been in focus brushes aside all these controversies with her mesmerizing smile. She has always posed herself in the Bachchan household as an ideal daughter-in-law in the making by tending as the perfect hostess to the Bachchans' guests, paying her due respects to Big B's mother, Teji Bachchan, attending to gatherings within the Bachchan household and so forth. Sources remark, "For a while now, Aishwarya has been a dutiful bahu (daughter-in-law) at their residence, so much so that Jayaji (Jaya Bachchan) has completely warmed up to her and has been telling friends for a while that Aishwarya will fit wonderfully into their household, a close family friend".
The much-awaited Abhishek-Aishwarya engagement has taken place and the wedding will soon be solemnized this year. Amitabh Bachchan has thrown a birthday bash for Aishwarya as a token of his approval for the marriage. The question still lurks ...will Aishwarya epitomize the conventional daughter-in-law in the Big B family or not?
