Anees Bazmee's Welcome is in the theatres. Some critics have appreciated the film, while others have dissed it but all of them agreed on one thing-that the last twenty minutes of the film was bad and should've been edited out. Few people know that Akshay had predicted that and a few days before the release of the film; the actor had many arguments over that with Anees over the climax of the film.
Says an insider, "The climax involves a house on the top of a cliff that is teetering on the edge and has the entire cast including Feroz Khan, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat trapped inside. The scene just goes on and on.
At the dubbing stage itself, Akshay felt the scene wasn't working. When he voiced his concern to the producer (Firoz Nadiadwala) and Anees, they didn't agree. In fact, the director was adamant and felt that the scene would be a hit with the kids.
Akshay had a discussion with Anees and tried to make him understand that it was not a children's film but Anees argued that his last film, No Entry, too had a long-drawn climax that worked. Finally Akshay conceded."
Anees admits there had been a discussion with Akshay over the climax, "In Welcome's climax a bee's nest is disturbed and a swarm of bees enter the house, attack the actors and chaos reigns.
When he heard the script, Akshay told me he had done a similar scene in Bhagam Bhaag and didn't want to repeat it. I told him I didn't know about it, as I hadn't seen the film. I told him that my scene was a one-minute gag and we should do it. Akshay agreed."
Anees is all praise for Akshay as an actor. "If Akshay had interfered in my script then the film wouldn't have been such a hit. Anil and Nana have strong dialogues. Akshay says whatever is in his mind but then he leaves it to the director.
Akshay would say, 'Aneesbhai it's good for our film and you know best' and leave it to me. In some scenes he had to just stand quietly and say nothing but he has been tremendously appreciated in the film because his role is different from what he usually does."
Anees says he never had to face any ego problems or interference from any of Welcome's stars Akshay, Nana, Anil and Feroz. "I never thought I was working with such big stars. When a director doesn't know his job the star gets insecure and kaam kharaab ho jaata hai."
