The movie opens with the orphan boy named Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) facing neglect and hardships at his aunt's family.(Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw and Harry Melling). His life comes to a drastic changes on his eleventh birthday when an enormous, mysterious stranger called Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) arrives to take him to the wizard world.
Harry starts to attend the Hogwarts School Of witchcraft And Wizardy. He learns about the secret behind his parent's death and his true self as a respected wizard for turning away the dark wizard Voldemort (Richard Bremmer's voice). Harry also receives the great friendship for a lifetime at Hogwarts from Hermione Granger (Emma watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint). He also meets his least favourite teacher Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) and fellow student Draco Malfoy(Tom Felton) who are ready to add bitterness to his life at Hogwarts.
A plot is brewing in the meanwhile by Voldemort through Professor Quirrell(Ian Hart) to regain the power. Professor Quirrell tries to acquire the Philosopher's stone, which grants immortality to its owner. Harry and friends discover the plot the plot, and seek to prevent the theft of the Stone, which is hidden and protected by the great wizard Albus Dumbledore(Richard Harris). Harry comes to face the most feared dark wizard and stops him from getting the stone.
The director Chris Columbus of the movie was selected by Warner Bros. There was a wide selection for the characters and J.K Rowling eventually agreed to write the screenplay. Many characters were exempted and slight deviations were made to adapt the story into the silver screen. Filming began in October 2000 at Leavesdon Studios and ended in July 2001.Due to the film's title difference in America and the United Kingdom, all scenes that mention the stone had to be filmed twice, once with the actors saying "philosopher's" and the second with them saying "sorcerer's".
The film release made the second highest grossing film in the history at the time. It was the highest grossing film of 2001, and had the highest grossing opening weekend in the United States of the year. The film received nominations, Academy Award nominations for "Best Art Direction", "Best Costume Design" and "Best Original Score" for John Williams. It also bagged many awards to its credit, and received positive reviews from almost all the nook and corner of the world.
The next releases of Harry Potter films also had the same success story to share. We will have a feel back of those films in the forthcoming articles.
