Sameer Dattani is one of the few actors who fill the young actor bracket today. No doubt he features in a film about youth and friendship - Life Main Kabhi Kabhi. In an exclusive interview, Sameer talks about his upcoming, stuck and south releases.
Life Main Kabhi Kabhi is about friends going different ways. Do we see another Dil Chahta Hai in the offing?
Not really! See, Life Mein Kabhie Kabhie is basically a film about five friends and five years of their life after graduation. It starts with college getting over. And like in college we are a close set of friends. We have a very immature outlook towards the world which is not very realistic but very idealistic. We all have dreams and aspiration. Everyone is in search of a goal and the ultimate goal being happiness. Someone wants to be an actor; someone wants to join their father's business. It's about how the group goes through changes and how they stand by each other during happy and sad moments and their problems as a group and individually is what the film is about.
Is Vikram Bhatt as serious director as he looks?
No, Vikram is not as serious as he looks. It's superb working with him! Largely it's been a learning experience. Now I know why actors like Aftab and Dino repeatedly work with Vikram. He is very chilled out and knows what he wants. He switches often; when its work he is serious and when he wants to let his hair down he just has fun. His humorous side is very unpredictable.
And how unpredictable will you be in the film?
I play the character of Jai Gokhale. He is a part of a group with different people some are rich some are not. He had a father who worked in a bank and he has seen his father suffer in a lot of powerless situations. And thus he feels that at some level, power is everything and his goal is to achieve power in life. Eventually it will make him happy. Attainment of power is his path to happiness
Who are you paired opposite in the film?
Well that's a secret I can't tell you.
This is Lalit Pandit's first solo album. How good is he as an independent composer?
The music very much complements the film. It is totally as per the situation. It has some good rocking tracks. There is song with all of us freaking out called Vallah Vallah and the other is Hum Khushi Ki Chaha Main.
Why isn't Mukhbir not released yet? Wasn't it completed long back?
Mukhbir has graphic work going on so it's taking it long to release. It was completed in November and we were hoping for it to release in March, but the graphic work took longer than expected. Hopefully it will release by mid year.
What is the status of your other long delayed film Marathon?
Marathon also has some graphic work. There is a lot of detailed work in the film because I play a character that doesn't have a leg.
Any South Indian films that you are doing now?
Yes. There is a film called Sajni, it's a Kananda film. There is a new girl cast opposite me. The film is being produced by Dr Murli Manohar who has produced films like Provoked and Ramji Londonwale. The film released on 23 February and is receiving great response. AR Rahman has composed for this film and it will be the first time he is composing for a Kananda film.
