From playing a faint-hearted gangster in Satya to an autoriksha driver in Mast to a rookie kidnapper in Darwaza Bandh Rakho, Snehal Dhabi has mostly taken up light comical roles. But with Sanjay Khandoori's Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, Dhabi has made, what we may call, a career-defining move!
Dhabi will play the role of a eunuch named 'Habiba Bai' in the film. But the character demands much more than a-man-clad-in-saree. Elaborating on his role, director Khandoori explains, "Snehal plays the head eunuch who runs the entire community and does the monetary collections. Also the eunuchs, who are at higher level, actually give out loans to people; they are more like loan sharks. So if somebody wants money at the last minute they can arrange for big finances because of their high contacts." If that wasn't enough, Snehal's character has another, completely humane facet to it. "His name in the film is Habiba, and the junior eunuchs call him baa, lovingly. So there is a lot of fury as well as a motherly touch to the character."A character of this magnitude surely seems to be a challenge for an actor who has primarily done only comic roles. However, Dhabi seems to have put his all into it. And here is the directors verdict - "I think it was quite a challenging role for Snehal to pull off, but he has done a fabulous job."
Ek Chalis Ki Last Local features Abhay Deol and Neha Dhupia in the lead. Deepak Shirke also plays a pivotal role of an extortionist in the film and is shown attracted to men. There is a hilarious sequence where Shirke gags Abhay Deol and ties him to the bed to indulge in a gay activity.
The movie is scheduled to release by the second week of April.
