Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 to famous poet Harivansh Rai Bachchani and Teji Bachchan. Amitabh was initially named Inquilaab. However, at the suggestion of fellow poet Sumitranandan Pant, Harivansh Rai changed his name to Amitabh which means, "the light that would never go off."

Amitabh's original surname was Shrivastava. But his father had adopted the pen-name Bachchan (meaning "child-like" in colloquial Hindi), under which he published all his works. Since then, it has become the surname of all members of his family.

Amitabh Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's Bhuvan Shome. Thereafter, he got his first acting role as one of the seven protagonists in Saat Hindustani. The film flopped at Box-office but Amitabh won his first National Film Award for Best Newcomer.

In 1973 Amitabh Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri. They have two children from this marriage Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta. Amitabh and Jaya worked in films like Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975) and Sholay (1975). Their last film together was Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
