KAHAANI is a thriller which you just cannot miss. Sujoy Ghosh goes about unraveling the mystery of Vidya Bagchi's (Vidya Balan) missing husband with such neat detailing that the trump card he reveals in the end is like a swift blow to the Solar Plexus. It catches you unawares and leaves you short of breath. Stupendous. Take a bow, Sujoy Ghosh.
Rediff - Sukanya Verma’s Rating: 4
Vidya Balan excels in Kahaani, a film which is much too enjoyable to find flaws.
NDTV - Subhash K. Jha’s Rating:
Kahaani is one of those rare films that can easily lay claim to being a game-changer.Enthralling, absorbing and engaging the narrative never resorts to italicized emotions to get our attention. We are hooked unconditionally from scene one. We surrender to Vidya's journey. She gives us no choice.
Bollywood Hungama -Taran Adarsh’s Rating: 4
KAHAANI works big time because Vidya Balan makes it come alive. It is several notches above the stuff we've been subjected to in the past. The movie triumphs in evoking emotions. You experience compassion, resentment, defenselessness and triumph at a variety of stages. A wonderful movie-going experience, you come out feeling a sense of pride, pleasure and fulfillment after having watched KAHAANI. Just do not miss it. Hugely recommended!
Times of India - Gaurav Malani’s Rating: 4
Kahaani, undoubtedly, is Sujoy Ghosh's most accomplished works till date as he emerges as a skilful storyteller with the film. Kahaani essentially banks upon the prowess of Vidya Balan, one of the most blessed actresses of the times, who impresses more with every new film.
Koimoi - Komal Nahta’s Rating: 4
The story of Kahaani is such that it keeps the audience guessing about what is going to happen next. As such the screenplay is very engaging and entertaining. While Vidya’s character draws the audience’s sympathy, the way she goes about the search makes the audience change their opinion of her. The climax, which reveals the truth about the entire case, is shocking. Overall, the writers have done a commendable job.
Hindustan Times - Anupama Chopra’s Rating: 3.5
Kahaani is a nifty thriller with an enjoyment quotient that is indirectly proportionate to how long you spend thinking about the plot. If you back-track and try to connect all the dots, the implausibility of the story amplifies - there's even a piecing-together-the-puzzle moment that echoes The Usual Suspects but this riddle isn't a patch on the intricate web of lies in the Bryan Singer film. However, if you're willing to think less, there is some fun to be had here.
Mid-Day - Shaheen Parkar’s Rating: 3.5
Kahaani takes you on a ride of Kolkata along with Vidya -- the woman on a mission -- in her quest to find her hubby who has vamoosed into thin air. She conspires and even makes herself bait including hacking computers to find vital clues that can lead to her goal.
CNN IBN - Rajeev Masand’s Rating: 3.5
'Kahaani' feels longer than its 115 minutes running time, partly because there is no escape from its gritty tone. Yet the suspense remains consistently tight, and the story well-executed. A word also for the haunting background score that only adds to the mood of the film.
India Today - Kaveree Bamzai’s Rating: 3.5
Kahaani, a fast, fun, fearless thriller has made up for it.
