Exclusive Interview: Kiran Rao

Superstar Aamir Khan's wife Kiran Rao, who was the assistant director for movies like Lagaan, Swades, Monsoon Wedding and Saathiya, is very popular for her unique style of filmmaking. The lady director is quite excited about her recent tie up with a new director Anand Gandhi for the movie Ship of Theseus. In an exclusive interview with Oneindia reporter Sonika Mishra, Kiran shared many interesting things about the movie.

What are your expectations from Ship Of Theseus?
The film had such an impact on me that I immediately agreed to tie up with it. I told Anand that your film is brilliant and I want to help you in promoting the movie. After watching Ship Of Theseus, I realised that maximum people should see and enjoy it.

When and how you decided to tie up with this film?
When I asked Anand about his plan for the distribution of the movie, he said that "if you support us, then it would be easier for us to sell the movie." So, I decided to say yes and I am so proud that finally we are making such films in India.

Before saying yes, did you ask Aamir Khan about it?
I told him about Ship Of Theseus and also showed the movie to him. He also loved the movie after watching it. Then he told me that I should do this film.

Ship Of Theseus will have limited audience. What kind of audience you want to target?
It's a very different kind of film and it's possible that people will not understand the movie at first, but still this movie will change your perception. This movie is not for people, who just want entertainment from movies.

So, Does that mean you are not targeting Box-Office?
We have not made this movie for money. It's a small budget film and such films are shown in film festivals only. And, it would be wrong from our part to expect Box-Office numbers from such a film.

Kiran's Interview

Bollywood has completed 100 years and many directors have experimented with their films. Do you feel the difference?

Film industry is changing slowly and not just because it has completed 100 years, this trend started from the past few years. Different kind of films are being made and accepted by the audience now.

This is happening for the first time that only online media has been invited for the movie's promotion. Do you think that this will help you reach the target audience?

Yes, that's what we are expecting. I think people are more interested in reading e papers, e magazine today. This is a new way of marketing.

What are your upcoming projects?

I don't have any film right now, but I am writing one script.

We heard that Kiran Rao will now only make women oriented films.

I haven't said that I will make only women oriented films, but I don't think that a film can work without a strong female role. I don't like such movies, in which a woman is shown only in good clothes and make up. Such roles don't have any identity. I will support such films in which females are shown as the main character.

Who will you cast in your film as main lead?

It depends on the role actually. Recently, I saw Nimrat Kaur's Lunch Box's trailer. She did an excellent job. I am very impressed with her acting. Even our Bollywood actresses are doing some great work these days. Actresses like Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone are doing good roles. We can say that in our industry, not only we have stars, but good performers also.
