Check Out Mani Ratnam's Best Films On His 58th Birthday

Bollywood has a reason to celebrate today as versatile film director and producer Mani Ratnam has turned 58.

Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam, popularly known as Mani Ratnam has earned the reputation of being one of the best film directors in Indian cinema, and with so many hits and wide critical acclaims, Ratnam surely deserves so.

Although, Ratnam has been pre-dominantly associated with Tamil movies but his contribution to Bollywood has also been exceptional. He made his debut in film direction with a Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983) which fetched Ratnam with huge critical appreciation and an award for the screenplay at the Karnataka State Film Awards.

Since then the talented film maker came up with series of great movies and scores of awards and nominations. Mani Ratnam has always been recognised for his unique story telling style and substance full film making.

Ratnam was born in erstwhile Madras in 1956 and belongs from a film making family as his father Venus Gopalratnam was a film producer and so is his brother G. Venkateshwaran.

After acquiring a management degree from Mumbai, Ratnam initially started his career as a management consultant; however as he had film making in his blood, Ratnam soon stepped into his ideal genre.

Dil Se

Dil Se

Dil Se (1998) starring Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala happens to be the first Hindi language film by Mani Ratnam. Although, the flick based on Northeast disturbances could not garner much Box Office collection, it surely is one of the best contemporary films by Ratnam.

Roja

Roja

Roja (1992) starring Arvind Swammy and Madhubala is originally a Tamil flick but was later dubbed into Hindi. The movie based on terrorism won three national awards and was also nominated for best film in 18th Moscow International Film Festival.

Raavan

Raavan

Raavan (2010) starring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Vikram is a Hindi thriller in which Abhishek plays a negative role. This film also enjoyed the collaboration of Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman but could not garner much appreciation commercially.

Bombay

Bombay

Bombay (1995) staring Arvind Swammy and Manisha Koirala is a love story of a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl in the backdrop of 1992 Bombay riots. Although, the film met some controversy for supposed biasness towards one side, Bombay enjoyed good response at the Box Office with international acclaim.

The movie Yuva (2004), a multi starrer flick is a youth oriented movie comprising three different tales. Essentially based on student politics, the movie features Ajay Devgan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi, Esha Deol, Rani Mukherji and Kareena Kapoor.

Saathiya

Saathiya (2002) featuring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukherji is a love story and was a Tamil film remake. Saathiya is Ratnam's production and was directed by Shaad Ali. Although the film did average performance commercially, but the music being composed by talented A R Rahman, several tracks were chartbusters.

Guru

Guru

The movie Guru (2007) is a multi starrer flick featuring Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R. Madhavan, Vidya Balan, Arya Babbar and Mithun Chakraborty in lead roles. Guru is supposed to be based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder of Reliance Industries.
