Deepika Padukone is playing the role of a Marati mulgi with a funny English accent in the movie. Happy New Year is a musical heist with an ensemble cast. It will see the team of Farah Khan-Shahrukh Khan-Deepika Padukone reunite after the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om.

The film directed by Farah Khan and produced under the Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd banner also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah in pivotal roles. Many people have been thinking that Deepika's role in the movie is to romance Shahrukh Khan. If you feel so then you are so wrong, for a secret source has revealed that, "Deepika is more like one of the boys in the caper. She plays a bar dancer who is called by Shahrukh to teach his crew how to dance in a global dance competition."

Sources further added that it was Shahrukh's idea to down play the romantic angle. Deepika Padukone has been doing such different and innovative roles in all her upcoming movies, be it Finding Fanny, Tamasha, Piku or Happy New Year.
