Tanuja Samarth aka Tanuja was born to filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth and actress Shobhna Samarth. Her sister Nutan was also one of the versatile actresses of all time. Coming back to Tanuja, she debuted as a child actor with her older sister Nutan in Hamari Beti (1950) as Baby Tanuja. As an adult, she debuted in the film Chhabili (1960) which was helmed by her mother and had her sister, Nutan, in the lead. However, it was Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi which brought her acting prowess to limelight.

She went on to star in films like Jewel Thief, Haathi Mere Saathi, Door Ka Raahi, Mere jeevan Saathi, Do Chor, Ek Baar Muskara Do (1972), Kaam Chor, Yaarana, Khuddar, and Masoom. During the mid 1960s, Tanuja started a parallel career in Bengali cinema with Deya Neya (1963) opposite Uttam Kumar. She has also dabbled in Marathi cinema.

Tanuja tied the knot with filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee in 1973. The couple has two daughters, actresses Kajol and Tanisha.
