While his remarkable acting career is widely discussed among movie buffs, the actor's love story with Saira Banu, who is someone half his age, is also something that has always been widely discussed amongst fans.
But many don't know the fact that Dilip had married a second time and regretted that decision throughout his life. The legendary actor's 101st birth anniversary was on December 11, and marking the day, let's revisit this not-so-good part of his life.
Saira & Dilip's love story
Saira Banu was born in 1944, the year when the Naya Daur actor debuted in cinemas. She grew up watching his films and was his ardent fan. Well, after a few years, Saira became an actor, and she got a chance to work with Dilip Kumar. Eventually, cupid struck in their lives, and the veteran stars got married in the year 1966. Saira was 22, and Dilip was 44.
Dilip Kumar's second marriage
Saira and Dilip's marriage was all rosy, and both were the ideal couple for all Bollywood fans. But the couple remained childless after the Kashmir Ki Kali actress suffered miscarrigae in 1972, and the duo decided to try for a child after the incident.
Dilip, who was still married to Saira, married a lady from Hyderabad named Asma Rehman in 1981. He met his second wife at a cricket match in Hyderabad, and he was introduced to Asma by his sisters Fauzia and Saeeda.
The marriage lasted for only two years (1981-1983) and he had always regretted the relationship. Talking about his second marriage, Kumar wrote in his autobiography, "Well, the one episode in my life that I would like to forget and which we, Saira, and I, have pushed into eternal oblivion is a grave mistake I made under pressure of getting involved with a lady named Asma Rehman whom I had met at a cricket match in Hyderabad."
Saira, who was a self-obsessed fan of Dilip, spoke in an interview about the actor's second marriage. She was quoted as saying, "For me, it was always Saab, no one else. I was his fan from the time I can remember."
"While still a teenager, I wanted to be his wife. I'm very headstrong and once I made up my mind, there was no stopping me. I knew many beautiful women wanted to marry Saab, but he chose me. It was my dream come true and that's what my marriage has been - a perfect dream."
