Yesteryear Actress Asha Parekh Turns 71 Today !

Yesteryear actress Asha Parekh, who has acted in classics like Kati Patang and Love In Tokyo turns 71 today. She was one of the most popular actress in the sixties and has delivered numerous hits in her career. She began her career as a child artist and then went onto become one the most successful actresses of all time.

Asha Parekh was born into a middle-class Gujrati family to a Hindu father and a Muslim mother. She started her career under the screen name baby Asha Parekh in the film Aasmaan. The movie was a flop and she decided to quit acting. She made a comeback at the age of sixteen and was cast opposite Shammi Kapoor in Dil Deke Dekho, which turned her into an overnight star. For her role in the movie Kati Patang, Asha parekh was awarded the filmfare best actress award. She was known more of an eye candy but that trend changed after she starred in Do Badan and Chirag, where she enacted some serious roles.

After quitting from acting, she directed many television serials including the mega hit show Kora Kagaz. She was the first female chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, where she was embroiled in many controversies because of censoring films. She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement award in 2002. So here's wishing Asha Parekh a very happy birthday.
