The Ghazi Attack Critics Review

Filmibeat.com
Firstly, debutante director Sankalp Reddy needs to be applauded for picking up this not-much-known historical incident for his story-telling. Kay Kay Menon is a complete show-stealer as the impulsive, arrogant officer who believes in the philosophy of 'save the nation not by dying for it but by killing the enemy'. Rana Daggubati on the other hand plays a calmer version who 'waits' for the orders and gets to be a major player in the second half of the film. Verdict: If you ain't in the mood for some lovey-dovey watch, then 'The Ghazi Attack' is a perfect pick for you to turn back the pages of the Indian history and revisit a gripping tale of unsung heroes who risked their lives to rescue the tricolor!
Hindustan Times
A war film is not exactly common in Indian cinema, and one that focusses completely on a chapter from a conflict without digressing into romance, dreams and dances needs to be lauded, and Sankalp Reddy’s Telugu work, The Ghazi Attack has the ability to engross. Great photography by Mathi, and lovely work by the special effects team propel Ghazi into death defying waters in a drama where the fear is clearly etched on the face of each Indian sailor. Really, an engaging piece of cinema.

Dealing with historic events in Indian cinema is not easy and hence the makers post a huge disclaimer, even mentioning their actors, directors as ‘law abiding citizens of the country’. The second half is completely gripping with a cat and mouse chase happening between the two submarines and a funny dialogue like the Pakistani Captain saying “Ye Captain hai ya liftman” when Indian submarine shifts up and down, adjusting to the Pakistani shooting range is funny enough. The Ghazi Attack has a riveting story and good performances from its lead cast. It lacks perfection in terms of its visual appeal.
The Times Of India
An elaborate disclaimer at the beginning of The Ghazi Attack clarifies that though it is inspired by historic events, it is ‘purely a work of fiction’. While various versions of this underwater incident have surfaced, this film is based on the claim that Indian submarine INS-Rajput (renamed as S-21 here) attacked Ghazi, resulting in its subsequent sinking near India’s eastern coast. Rana Daggubati delivers a mature performance and Atul Kulkarni is sincere but supporting actors look nothing like Navy men. The second half keeps you on the edge of your seat as the submarines go head-to-head, firing torpedoes while dodging and defending themselves.
The Indian Express
There are stories within stories, and so there is the aggressive Capt Singh, the pragmatic officer Arjun (an impressive Rana Daggubati), Singh’s loyal second-in-command Devaraj (Atul Kulkarni) and two measly Bangladeshi refugees plucked from the sea by the brave Arjun himself. The film doesn’t cut corners on underwater shots of ships damaged, leaking, hissing and sputtering as they turn leeward and starboard, even though the first shot of Singh and Arjun first heading out to sea is Titanically fake. At the same, all Naval soldiers are unshaven, unkempt, and sweat at the possibility of going food-less for a day.
