Comedy is the flavor of the season and the runaway success of a series of comic films has prompted even those who specialized in making serious films to attempt a laughathon next. Yes, Kalpana Lajmi, who has several thought-provoking films to her credit [Ek Pal, Rudaali, Darmiyaan, Daman, Kyon?, Chingaari], has now changed tracks and decided to make an comic caper.
How did the idea originate? "It's a complete departure from the kind of films I have made. My friends always compliment my sense of humor. That set me thinking and I decided to try my hand at something I felt I was comfortable at," Kalpana informs me, "Mind you, making a comedy film is tough indeed, but I decided to accept the challenge."
What's the film all about? "It's about people being conned by superstition. It tells the story of a con astrologer [Anupam Kher] and how he advises young people about their Mr. Right," Kalpana enlightens, "I am planning to cast Esha Deol for the role of this girl who is advised by the astrologer that she would meet her Mr. Right soon, but the guy she ends up meeting is a complete contrast."
The film will star two guys in lead roles and Kalpana has bounced off the idea to Aftab Shivdasani and also Dino Morea for the first role and Shreyas Talpade for the other role. "Anupam and Esha have agreed in principle, while the two male leads are still undecided," Kalpana adds. There were rumors that she was planning to cast Saif Ali Khan. "Yes, I was, but he's in the big league now. Getting his approval is extremely difficult," she states.
Vinod Shah and Harish Shah, who had produced Jaal - The Trap earlier, will produce the film.
