Finally
the
suspense
over
Basanti
in
Ekta
Kapoor's
Gabbar
Singh
is
over.
The
role
will
be
played
by
the
well
known
Gujarati
and
Bhojpuri
films
Mona
Thiba.
Thrilled over being cast for the all-important role, Mona Thiba, who is 15 Gujarati and four Bhojpuri films veteran, said "I am very happy and excited about Gabbar Singh and it is great working with Balaji as it is a very famous and big production house. Working under such a big banner is great."
Known as Madhuri Dixit of the Gujarati film industry, Mona says that she got the role solely owing to her superb performance in a Bhojpuri film. So how did it all happen? "Actually I have done a few Bhojpuri movies before and in Kanhiya I portrayed a very bubbly character and when Mahesh Pandey, who is directing Gabbar Singh, watched the movie, he immediately decided to cast me as Basanti. All that I can say now is that I am very lucky to get such a great opportunity," says Mona.
Interestingly, unlike the original Sholay, Ekta kapoor's movie will not have the characters of Jai and Veeru in the lead roles. Instead, the villain Gabbar Singh will be the main attraction. So, will Basanti too will have much prominence in the film.
"Of course, Basanti is a very important character as she has a very important suspense hidden with her. Now if you remove Basanti from this film, the film will seem incomplete," says Mona. Now what, however, remains to be seen is whether Ekta's Basanti will be able to compete Ram Gopa Verma's Basanti and will either of them be any match for the original Basanti played by Hema Malini three decades ago!
