Jaya Bachchan turns down Rajya Sabha nomination

By By Raymond Ronamai

The Bachchan family is in the news again. Actress-politician Jaya Bachchan was re-nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Chief of Samajwadi Party Mulayam Singh Yadav but she turned down the offer citing family reasons.

The refusal by Ms. Bachchan came as a surprise because the decision to re-nominate her for the second term was taken at the recent party meeting. Mulayam"s move to field Jaya for the Rajya Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh is seen as an attempt to spite Amar Singh, who is very close to the Bachchan family.

The Rajya Sabha elections will be held on June 17. The Samajwadi Party has named Rashid Masood as its second candidate for the poll.
