After winning 12 National and International awards, Smile Foundation production I Am Kalam got a special invitation to be screened at the Buckingham Palace. Prince Charles' invite came after veteran Gulshan Grover wrote to him about the film and the message it imparts of promoting education in India.

The Prince was so moved by the idea of I Am Kalam that he decided to appreciate this piece of art. I Am Kalam is a story about a child labourer Chhotu, played by Harsh Mayar, who decides to educate himself. The character in the film is inspired by former President APJ Abdul Kalam.

Harsh Mayar's real life story draws a clear reference from the film. In real life the kid was born in a Delhi slum. The child actor won the 58th National Award for the Best Actor in the child artiste category. "It feels good to be appreciated for my acting. I am speechless," he told Mumbai Mirror after winning the award. Apparently, Harsh Mayar had given auditions for Salman Khan's production Chillar Party, but was rejected. Later, he was chosen for I Am Kalam from around 3000 candidates to play the role of Chhotu.
