When prodded on his choice of actress for the role, he said that Nargis was the beautiful lady of Indian cinema and they wanted someone who looked just as beautiful. He was quoted saying, "We were thinking of many actresses. And while Manisha is really pretty and a fantastic actress, my primary reason for taking her is that she's a cancer survivor and, having been through the journey herself, can identify with Nargisji's fight with the Big C. When we met, she told me a little about that journey."

Incidentally Manisha and Sanjay have starred together in films like Khauf, Kartoos, Yalgaar, Sanam, Achanak, Baaghi and Mehbooba.

Manisha was last seen in Rohit Kaushik's long-delayed Chehre. The period-drama saw her in the role of an oldworld actress who moves from black-and-white to colour from the silent era to the talkies, through a murder-mystery.

Further the actress admitted to Mumbai Mirror that she was hungry for good roles but rued that none of the offers were substantial. "I made some bad choices in the past but today time is precious and I don't want to waste it on substandard work."

The Dutt biopic also features Sonam Kapoor as Sanjay's earlier love interest, Vicky Kaushal as his friend from the US, Anushka Sharma as a scribe, Paresh Rawal as Sunil Dutt and Dia Mirza as Maanayata Dutt. The makers are eyeing for a Christmas 2017 release.
