Rangoon is a period, war drama set against the backdrop of World War II during 1944. In the movie, Kangana Ranaut plays Julia, a feisty actress, while Saif Ali Khan plays a filmmaker who falls in love with her. On the other hand, Shahid Kapoor is seen as Nawab Malik, who is a solider.

Talking about his character Shahid Kapoor told a daily, "My character Nawab Malik is a very different character. Vishal sir always offers me something challenging and different."
He added, "Nawab Malik is the most heroic character I have ever played so far, who is a soldier with a strong sense of duty and big patriot. It is a very inspiring character and I am glad to get the opportunity."
