Shabana Azmi Reveals Why Bollywood Can Never Do A Meryl Streep!
Veteran actress Shabana Azmi reveals why Bollywood stars can never speak out against a political leader the way Meryl Streep did at the Golden Globes Awards.
The
President-elect
Donald
Trump
was
mocked
on
stage
by
Meryl
Streep
at
the
Golden
Globes
Awards
and
Hollywood
and
Bollywood
alike
have
shown
their
support
to
the
actress
and
praised
her
for
being
bold.
She
was
upset
with
the
fact
that
Donald
Trump
made
fun
of
a
disabled
reporter
during
his
election
campaign
and
Trump
has
denied
the
allegations
despite
clearly
being
caught
on
camera
doing
so.
Veteran
actress
Shabana
Azmi
revealed
that
Bollywood
can
never
stand
up
to
a
political
leader
like
the
way
Meryl
Streep
did
against
Donald
Trump
for
the
fear
of
backlash!
The
mockery
an
actor
receives
for
taking
a
stand
against
a
political
leader
is
unbearable
and
an
artists
career
can
come
to
a
screeching
halt.
She
said,
"After
Meryl
spoke
out
she
got
the
wholehearted
support
of
the
entire
Hollywood
fraternity.
In
India
no
one
will
speak
up
in
support
of
a
celebrity's
political
stand
for
the
fear
of
a
backlash.
There
is
no
chance
that
Meryl
Streep's
films
will
be
boycotted
(In
America)
or
theatres
burned
down
when
her
next
film
is
released
because
freedom
of
expression
is
respected
there.
Here
we
all
know
what
happens."
Shabana
Azmi
also
revealed
the
backlash
she
faced
for
her
films.
She
said,
"A
pact
was
made
between
the
government
and
12
producers
that
I
would
be
restrained
from
speaking
on
the
Babri
Masjid
issue.
My
film
Dharavi
was
pulled
off
the
theatres,
screens
showing
Fire
were
vandalised.
Nandita
Das
and
I
were
removed
from
Water
after
we
had
shaved
off
our
heads."
