Bollywood Makeup Artist Pandhari Juker Passes Away

Fondly known as Pandhari Dada, he started his career as a makeup artist during the era of black and white films. Filmmaker Yash Chopra had once said, "To make a face shine on screen is not makeup. Makeup is the one that can show the beauty of the mind of a person on his face and if anyone can do it successfully from black and white films to colour cinema, then he is Pandhari Dada." The friendship between Yash Chopra and Pandhari Dada lasted for decades.

It was said that Pandhari Juker persuaded filmmaker Subhash Ghai to cast Madhuri Dixit in his film Karma (1986). According to another story, during the shoot of Amitabh Bachchan's debut film Saat Hindustani (1969), Pandhari Dada had to return to Mumbai. So Big B continued to shoot without washing his face, wearing the makeup that the makeup man had done, until he returned.

In 2012, Pandhari Juker was honoured at the 59th National Film Awards by the Government of India. Juker was awarded the Shantaram Jeevan Gaurav for his work by the Government of Maharashtra.

Amitabh Bachchan mourned his death and tweeted, "Pandhari Juker .. no more .. the Master, the Icon, the Ultimate make up artist .. passes away .. He touched hundreds of faces and enhanced them .. but it was the hundreds of hearts that he touched that endeared us to him .. Prayers," (sic).
