Ajmer 92 Trailer: Directed by Pushpendra Singh, Ajmer 92's trailer was dropped on Monday. The film is scheduled to release on July 21. It is based on the gruesome mass gangrape that transpired in the city almost three decades ago.

The film retells the dark events and how devastated girls were blackmailed by powerful men In Rajasthan's Ajmer. The girls were mostly minors who committed suicide, leading to hysteria and widespread panic in the city.

But what is the real story of the horrifying 1992 gangrape that has inspired this Bollywood film?

The true story behind Ajmer 92

The movie is inspired by the infamous 1992 scandal in Ajmer, where a series of events, including blackmail and rapes, were brought to light by a media report. The news was first broken by a local Hindi newspaper called Dainik Navjyoti, which is mostly circulated in Jaipur.

The case was called the "Ajmer blackmail kaand". Farooq and Nafis Chishti, who belonged to the influential Khadim family and were responsible for managing the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, led a group of young men to gangrape and blackmail minor women at a secluded farmhouse or bungalow.

Their first victim was a Class 12 student who wanted to join Congress.

According to reports, it was alleged that the local authorities had prior knowledge of the incidents for approximately a year but opted not to pursue legal action. Investigation findings indicated that Farooq Chishti befriended a young girl from Sophia Senior Secondary School in Ajmer and exploited her by capturing explicit photos for his own advantage.

He manipulated her into introducing him to her fellow students. 'Dainik Navjyoti' stated that the number of victims involved in the case exceeded 250, ranging in age from 11 to 20 years old.

These girls were gangraped in the farmhouse by young men who were instructed by Chistys. They also took photographs of them in compromising positions and used them to silence the victims, which would prevent them from lodging police complaints.

However, after the photos were leaked and the news shocked everyone, the police took action, and the investigation led them to the perpetrators. Around 18 serial offenders were charged by the court in September 1992.

The first eight men who were tried were reportedly sentenced to life imprisonment, while four of them were later acquitted by the Rajasthan High Court in 2001. The case was then shifted to a fast-track court in 2007 in Ajmer, convicting Farooq Chishti. But he was released in 2013 by the High Court.
