Cannes 2023: The most glamorous time of the year is here again! The prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2023 officially opens today, May 16, and there's a lot you must be on the lookout for. From the most-anticipated movie screenings to glittering red-carpet appearances, there is a reason why all eyes are on the French Riviera this time around.
Cannes has picked up the pace after slowing down for a couple of years due to the pandemic. And this year, the international film festival will witness big Indian representation. A slew of celebrities and influencers have headed to France to attend the festival.
As we gear up for the event to kick off, here's everything you need to know about the most sought-after event.
When is the 2023 Cannes Film Festival?
This year the event begins on May 16. The film festival will be opened by the French-language film, Jeanne du Barry, starring Johnny Depp. The festival will conclude with Pixar's animated film Elemental on May 27.
Where will the Cannes Film Festival 2022 take place?
As ever, the Cannes Film Festival will take place on the southeast coast of France along the French Riviera. The festival will be organized at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès on the famous Promenade de la Croisette. The selected films will be screened in the Louis Lumière Auditorium.
Special screenings and Out of Competition films are also offered to the public and guests throughout the event.
Where Can You Watch The Event LIVE?
Reports suggest that the Opening Ceremony will broadcast live internationally on Brut.
AWARDS & 2022 WINNERS
Palme d'Or (Golden Palm): The highest prize awarded to the best film in the official competition. Last year, Triangle of Sadness, directed by Ruben Östlund won the award.
Grand Prix: The second-highest prize awarded to the runner-up film in the official competition. Last year, Stars at Noon, directed by Claire Denis and Close directed by Lukas Dhon won the award.
Best Director: Awarded to the best director of a film in the official competition. Last year, Park Chan-wook won the award for Decision to Leave.
Best Actor: Awarded to the best male actor in a film in the official competition. In 2022, Song Kang-ho won for Broker
Best Actress: Awarded to the best female actor in a film in the official competition. Zar Amir Ebrahimi won the award for Holy Spider in 2022.
Jury Prize: A special prize awarded by the jury for artistic excellence in a film in the official competition. Eo directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, Le Otto Montagne, directed by Charlotte Vandermeersch, Felix van Groeningen
Best Screenplay: Awarded to the best screenplay of a film in the official competition. Tarik Saleh won it for Boy from Heaven.
Best Short Film: Awarded to the best short film in the official competition. The Water Murmers won it in 2022.
Camera d'Or: Awarded to the best debut feature film across all sections of the festival. Gina Gammell and Riley Keough for War Pony.
Un Certain Regard Prize: Awarded to the best film in the Un Certain Regard section, which showcases innovative and daring works. The Worst One directed by Lise Akoka, and Romane Gueret won the award.
Queer Palm: Awarded to the best LGBTQ-themed film across all sections of the festival. Joyland won the award.
Palme d'Or for Best Documentary: Awarded to the best documentary film in the official competition. All That Breaths won the award in 2022.
