Contrary to earlier reports and speculations, Ameesha Patel revealed that Kareena Kapoor was not the one to back out of the project but was, in fact, asked to leave due to differences with the director, Rakesh Roshan.

Kareena Kapoor, who eventually made her cinematic debut with Refugee in 2000, was initially cast opposite Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. However, she departed from the project after a few days of filming, after which Ameesha Patel was roped in for the role.

Ameesha Patel recently shared her side of the story in an interview, explaining that Rakesh Roshan had requested Kareena Kapoor to leave the film, citing creative differences between them. According to Ameesha, Roshan's wife, Pinkie, was taken aback by this decision. The film's sets were ready, a substantial amount of money had already been invested, and Hrithik's debut was a highly anticipated moment for the entire team.

"Actually, she [Kareena] didn't back out. From what Rakesh ji told me, he asked her to leave the film because they were having differences. And Pinkie aunty, his wife and Hrithik's mom, said that they were shocked because the set was ready, and a replacement, Sonia had to be found in three days, and crores of rupees (had been spent) on that set, and it was Hrithik's debut, and everyone was really stressed. Pinky aunty told me that the day Rakesh saw me at the wedding, he did not sleep all night. He was like 'I got my Sonia, I got my Sonia, but I hope she says yes'," Ameesha disclosed.
