Thewa Captures Intriguing Tale Of Unsung Cratfsmen Of India & Their Skills, Here’s All You Need To Know

The documentary film Thewa by Shivani Pandey celebrates the craftsmen from India's Pratapgarh district in Rajasthan state. The film showcases the unique art of Thewa, which involves embossing fragile sheets of gold on colored glass to create intricate designs. The art dates back to the Rajput era and is being preserved with the support of institutions like the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).
The hour-long documentary captures the journey of these unsung heroes and their skills, while also exploring the reasons why women in the family are not taught this art. Pandey hopes that the film will create awareness about the need to preserve and promote Thewa and the artisans' expectations from the state and central government.
Currently, there are only 12 families in a small town called Pratapgarh in Rajasthan who are dedicated to keeping this art alive. Many of them have received National and State awards for their exceptional work.
Sharing the story behind the film's production, Shivani said, "With support of an institution like IGNCA, a rare art like Thewa is being preserved in its original form. Without patronage such arts might not survive for long so their preservation and conservation is very important".
The film has received tremendous reviews from experts in the industry, with writer Malvika Joshi stating that arts and culture can be preserved through such films. Atul Gangwar, former member of the Central Board of Film Certification, suggested that more films based on arts and culture from other states should be made for Indian audiences. Naresh Sirohi, founder and former senior advisor for DD Kisan, praised the film for its thorough research and production.
In conclusion, Thewa is a tribute to the skilled artisans who have kept this unique art alive for generations. The documentary highlights the importance of preserving and promoting such arts and culture for future generations. Pandey's film serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of the craftsmen of the Pratapgarh district and their remarkable art.
