Veteran Actress & Classical Dancer Bela Bose No More

Bela Bose, the legendary actress who acted in more than 200 films passed away of February 20 at the age of 79. She made her Bollywood debut with the 1959 film Main Nashe Mein Hoon and went on to act in more than 200 Hindi and Regional movies in a career span of over three decades. The multi-talented actress was married to actor and filmmaker, Ashish Kumar. The veteran actress is survived by her son, daughter and grandson.

Acting Career Of Bela Bose

Bela, the trained classical dancer, got her first big break in the 1959 film, Main Nashe Mein Hoon, wherein, she did a dance number with Raj Kapoor. Bela got her first lead role at the age of 21 in the movie, Sautela Bhai opposite Guru Dutt.

Bela learnt acting through performing in Bengali plays. She rose to fame between 1961 and 1966. She played the role of Helen's sister in the 1962 film, Hawa Hawai. Her villainous role in 1975 film, Jai Santoshi Maa, was a huge hit and after that she was often approached to play the negative roles in movies.

Meanwhile, Bela was not just a trained classical Manipuri dancer, she also wrote poetry, was a skilled painter and also a state-level swimmer.
