Veteran Artist & Guru Dutt's Sister Lalita Lajmi Passes Away At 90

Eminent artist Lalita Lajmi passed away on February 13, today at the age of 90.

Eminent artist Lalita Lajmi passed away on February 13, today at the age of 90. The sad news of her demise was shared by Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation on social media.

JNAF took to Instagram to share the loss "Lajmi was a self-taught artist with a keen interest in classical dance. Her works had an element of melancholy and performance, seen here in her artwork, 'Dance of Life and Death'".

Lalita Lajmi was a director, producer and actor Guru Dutt's sister. The veteran artist was also a part of Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par. She had a special appearance in the film.

Author Yasser Usman, remembering Lalita Ji wrote, "While researching for this book, his sister told me they could have saved him. He was crying for help. He was not talking to them. And that remains a major regret in his brother's and his sister's life."

Lalita Lajmi was born in Calcutta in the year 1930 and had a keen interest in classical dancing. The noted painter, she stated painting in early 1960s's. The self-taught artists' early works drew inspirations from her personal life and observations. However, she works later started reflecting the hidden tension between man and woman. She was also influenced by Indian films such as those made by her brother Guru Dutt, Satyajit Ray and Raj Kapoor.
