Anubhav Sinha At 9th AIFF

Anubhav Sinha At 9th AIFF: Along with the screening of several critically acclaimed films, a Masterclass of Anubhav Sinha, Director of films like Tum Bin, Thappad, Mulk, Article 15, and Raavan, was organized on the third day of the 9th Ajanta-Ellora International Film Festival. A Creative Director of AIFF and a Film Director himself, Jayprad Desai interacted with Anubhav Sinha during the Masterclass.

Renowned Poet Javed Akhtar, Founder-Chairman of AIFF Nandkishor Kagliwal, Festival Director Ashok Rane, Artistic Director Chandrakant Kulkarni, Convener Nilesh Raut and a large number of film lovers were present.

Speaking in the class, Mr. Sinha said that when I told the story of 'Article 15' to people in my office, they thought nothing like this happens nowadays and asked me where such incidents happen today. At that very moment, I felt that I must make this movie now. Many people have contributed to the making of the film but I am credited for it.

Even though I worked in the film industry for three decades, people were thinking of me as less of a director and more of a technician. However, it was from 'Mulk' and 'Article 15' that I got recognition as a 'director'. Anubhav Sinha asserted that no one asks you any questions when you succeed.

We all have certain people in our lives without whom we cannot do anything. I too, have some such people in my life and they work for me. He further said that these people come in front of my eyes as soon as I am writing the script and become a part of the film. I don't know how it happens.

I did my education till 12th in Banaras. After that, I did my engineering education at Aligarh. My interest was in music, secularism, and diversity in society. I became an engineer instead of a doctor because I was afraid of blood. After becoming an engineer, I worked for one year, but while working, I realized that this is not what I wanted to do. Without any thought I left the job and started searching for what I wanted to do in a year; My friend's older brother was making a documentary. I went to work as an assistant and on the very first day I realized that this is what I want to do. Then I came to Mumbai on 4th December 1990 and from there, my journey has led me to where I am today. He also said that 'Shikast' was my first show on DoorChitravani.

Certain groups of people sneer at me saying I make very Intelligent political films so I will stay in the industry only for a short time. But I am worried about, whatsoever time I stay in the industry I would like to make films that I feel should be made. In the film industry, no one stands up for anyone. From 2011 to 2017, I doubted whether I was even a director or not. I had almost lost the courage to make a new film. 'Thappad' is my favourite film and 'Mulk' introduced me as a director.

Premchand, Mahadevi Verma, Jaishankar Prasad, Nagarjuna, Vijay Tendulkar are unknown to today's youth. They don't read these great people. Instead, many get merged into misleading content. Today's youth is just revelling in the reels, touching everything very superficially and moving on. He said that they need to know about India's culture, art, and literature and there is an urgent need for them for this.
