Ashutosh Gowariker Honoured With 'Medal Of St. Tropez', Becomes First Indian Filmmaker To Win

Director Ashutosh Gowariker received the prestigious 'Medal of St. Tropez' at the Nirvana Indian Culture and Cinema Festival on 1st June 2024 in St Tropez, France.

The acclaimed filmmaker, known for masterpieces like Lagaan (2001), Swades (2004), and Jodhaa Akbar (2008), expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition. He thanked Ms. Sylvie Siri, Mayor of Saint-Tropez, for the honour and looked forward to strengthening the bond between the cultural and cinema industries of France and India.

The second edition of the Nirvana Festival, held in the enchanting city of Saint-Tropez, also honoured His Excellency Jawed Ashraf, the Indian Ambassador to France and Monaco, and Lord Rami Ranger with the Medal of Saint Tropez.

Celebrating Cultural Ties

Ambassador Ashraf expressed delight at supporting the Nirvana Festival. He appreciated the festival's aim to connect France and India through culture, cinema, and cuisine, thanking Mayor Sylvie Siri for her support.

Lord Ranger shared his pride in accepting the Medal of Saint Tropez. He highlighted the historical connection between Saint-Tropez and Maharaja Ranjit Singh through General Jean-François Allard, who was born in Saint-Tropez. Ranger praised Allard’s contribution to defending the Sikh Kingdom and preserving Indian civilization.

Screenings and Cultural Events

Nirvana also featured screenings of Indian films, including Leena Yadav's Parched and Jude Anthany Joseph's 2018 - Everyone is a Hero. Gowariker's Swades was showcased among cinema enthusiasts in the picturesque setting of Saint-Tropez.

Several cultural events featuring Indian food, fashion, music, dance, and Yoga took place alongside the movie screenings.
