FWICE
on
boycotting
Maldives:
Amid
the
ongoing
diplomatic
tensions
between
Maldives
and
India,
the
Federation
of
Western
India
Cine
Employees
(FWICE)
has
decided
to
boycott
shoots
in
the
island
nation.
Condemning
the
recent
remarks
made
by
Maldives
cabinet
ministers
on
PM
Narendra
Modi,
the
film
industry
workers'
union
appealed
to
its
members
and
others
to
join
them
and
support
the
ban.
In
a
statement
they
also
urged
filmmakers
to
choose
for
'similar
locations
in
India.'
FWICE
appeals
filmmakers
to
boycott
Maldives
In
a
press
release
issued
by
FWICE,
the
body
condemned
'irresponsible'
and
'ridiculous'
remarks
of
the
Maldavian
ministers
passed
on
by
globally
respected
PM
Modi.
Its
official
statement
read,
"In
view
of
the
growing
row
between
India
and
the
Maldives
over
the
derogatory
statement
issued
by
three
ministers
of
Maldives,
the
FWICE
which
is
the
oldest
and
largest
Federal
body
of
the
workers,
technicians
and
artists
working
in
the
media
and
entertainment
industry,
strongly
condemns
the
most
irresponsible
and
ridiculous
remarks
of
the
ministers
of
Maldives
passed
on
globally
respected
Prime
Minister
Narendra
Modi
ji."
It
added,
"In
solidarity
with
the
nation
and
its
wide
culture,
the
members
of
the
FWICE
have
decided
to
boycott
Maldives
for
their
shooting
locations.
Instead,
the
FWICE
appeals
its
members
to
choose
similar
locations
in
India
for
their
shooting
purpose
and
contribute
towards
developing
the
tourism
in
India."
"All
the
producers
in
India
and
over
the
globe
are
hereby
advised
not
to
plan
any
shootings
or
production
activities
in
Maldives.
We
all
stand
in
strong
support
towards
our
Prime
Minister
and
our
Nation," the
statement
concluded.
Earlier,
the
Indian
Chamber
of
Commerce
(ICC)
also
urged
tourism
and
trade
associations
to
stop
promoting
Maldives
and
divert
all
inquiries
to
Lakshadweep.
For
context,
some
prominent
cabinet
members
of
the
Maldive
government
mocked
India
and
its
Prime
Minister
Narendra
Modi's
after
he
posted
a
few
pics
from
his
Lakshadweep
Islands
visit,
chilling
on
the
beach
and
trying
snorkelling
as
he
promoted
the
island.
The
comments
triggered
a
massive
boycott
of
the
Maldives
movement
on
social
media,
with
Indian
personalities
including
Akshay
Kumar,
Shraddha
Kapoor,
and
Salman
Khan
all
batting
for
exploring
Indian
islands.
Several
Indians
had
also
cancelled
their
trip
to
the
nation.
