Cannes 2024: Anasuya Sengupta Becomes First Indian Actor To Win Best Actress Award At Cannes

It's a momentous event for all Indians! Anasuya Sengupta scripted History after she received the Un Certain Regard Prize for Best Actress for her terrific performance in 'The Shameless'.

Written and directed by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov, the film revolves around the story of a girl named Renuka (played by Anasuya), who escapes from a brothel in Delhi after killing a police officer. The movie also stars Omara Shetty in a pivotal role.

During an interview, when Anasuya was asked about her reaction upon learning that her film was selected under the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes, she recalled the moment saying, "I received the news when Konstantin sent me a link to the press conference announcing the Cannes official selections. When our film's name was announced, I jumped out of the chair with ecstasy."

Cannes 2024: Who Is Anansuya Sengupta?

Calcutta-born actress Anasuya Sengupta kickstarted her acting career as a supporting actor in Anjan Dutta's 2009 film 'Madly Bangalee'.

Anasuya holds a degree in English literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She wanted to pursue a career in journalism. However, destiny had some other plans.

As per reports, Anasuya has also worked as a production designer. Before shifting to Mumbai in 2013, Anasuya honed her acting skills by doing theatres for some time.

Talking to My Kolkata, Anasuya said, "As a production designer in Mumbai, the projects I hold the closest to my heart include Sanjeev Sharma's Saat Uchakkey (2016), starring the likes of Manoj Bajpayee and Anupam Kher, and Srijit Mukherji's Forget Me Not, starring Ali Fazal as part of the Netflix anthalogy Ray (2021)."

Reportedly, she contributed to the set design of Masaba Gupta's popular Netflix show, Masaba Masaba.
