Kiran Rao Spills Beans On Her Marriage With Aamir Khan: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and director Kiran Rao took the internet by storm after they announced their separation in 2021 after 16 years of marriage. Since then, they have been co-parenting their son, Azad Rao Khan. Even after calling it quits, the duo continues to share a friendly bond with each other. Aamir even produced Kiran's latest directorial, Laapataa Ladies, under his production banner Aamir Khan Productions. Recently, the director got candid about her marriage with Aamir and spilled some never-heard-before beans about their marriage.

Aamir Khan & Ex Wife Kiran Rao Were In A Live-In Relationship Before Marriage?

Kiran Rao is currently basking in the success of her latest directorial, Laapataa Ladies. During a recent tete-a-tete with She The People, the filmmaker shared her thought on the institution of marriage.

Kiran further revealed that she was in a live-in relationship with Aamir before tying the knot and they ended up getting married because of parental pressure.

Talking about it, she stated, "Aamir and I lived together for a year before we got married, and honestly, we did it more because parents and you know... all the rest of it and even at that time we knew that it's a great institution if you can function as individuals as well as a couple within that institution."

Kiran Rao On Her Divorce With Aamir Khan

In the same interview, Kiran also addressed her divorce with Aamir. She was quoted saying, "The thing we don't talk about enough is how marriage tends to stifle, especially women. How you could find perhaps a way to be yourself within the institution. That's something up for debate and discussion. Esther Perel (American psychologist) has written an amazing book on it, and it's very interesting. As apes, we were living together. This nuclear family setup is a pressure, and it's a pressure especially on women. There's so much responsibility on the women to run the house, keep the family together. In fact, women are expected to keep in touch with the in-laws, to be in touch with your husband's family. That's a lot of expectation"

For the unversed, Aamir and Kiran met on the sets of Lagaan. They began dating in 2004 before tying the knot in 2005.
