After Annapoorani, Netizens Call For Ranbir Kapoor's Animal Removal From Netflix As It Revives Misogyny Debate

Animal OTT release revives misogyny debate

Animal OTT release revives misogyny debate: Ranbir Kapoor and Rashika Mandanna starrer revenge crime drama Animal was one of the highest grossing films of 2023. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film, released on December 1, recently made its digital premiere on Netflix.

The crime action film was dropped on streaming platform Netflix on January 26, which has again revived the debate of sexism, misogyny, violence, gore, domestic violence and other similar themes, just like it had sparked massive backlash after its theatrical release last year.

Animal has again become the talk of the town, and a section of internet users, especially women, are now demanding to remove the film from Netflix.

Netizens demand Animal removal from OTT

Animal's OTT release has stirred the sexism and misogyny debate again. After watching the film, many called out the makers and demanded it be pulled down from the streaming platform.

A user on X wrote, "I'm an Indian Hindu woman disturbed by the movie Animal, which shows an Indian man having affairs outside marriage. Cultural heritage what makes India & this movie disturbs the "one man one wife" concept of this country. Plz take action."

The tweet went viral in no time on the microblogging platform X (formerly, Twitter) and people compared it to the removal of Nayanthara's film Annapoorani, which was accused of hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus.

Another added, "Remove annapoorani @NetflixIndia but promotes Misogyny and hatred. And you ma'am @NayantharaU have apologized to these vadakans. Shame on Netflix."

A third user tweeted. "@netflix please remove Hindi movie ANIMAL from Netflix; it reflects gore violence and abuse against women, this isn't called entertainment."

Annapoorani Controversy

Nayanthara starrer Annapoorani, began streaming on Netflix on December 29. But it was subsequently removed from the platform following FIRs that claimed it hurt Hindu sentiments. Some of the controversial scenes include Nayanthara's character offering namaz in a hijab before cooking biryani, despite her playing a Hindu brahmin girl in the film.
