Ranveer Singh took to his X account on Sunday and asked his fans to explore the beauty of India. He wrote, "This year let's make 2024 about exploring India and experiencing our culture. There is so much to see and explore across the beaches and the beauty of our country. Chalo India let's #exploreindianislands Chalo bharat dekhe (Let's explore India)."
He posted a picture of the Maldives along with the post, and soon netizens pointed out his mistake. The actor got massively trolled for the same. One said, "You are promoting Indian islands while putting a picture of Maldives. What is wrong with you, Ranveer?"
"So Ranveer Singh is using the pic of Maldives to boycott Maldives," said another user. Another person added, "Ranveer Singh was using Maldives pic to promote Lakshadweep. He has now deleted the post. Moye Moye"
"Ranveer Singh tried to promote Indian tourism by sharing a photo from.....the Maldives. The photos show islands Maalhos, Hibalhidhoo, and Dharavandhoo in Maldives," commented a user.
After the users pointed out the gaffe, Ranveer was quick to rectify the mistake and shred another post, now sans an image.
For the unversed, the 38-year-old actor and his wife, Deepika Padukone, are frequent visitors of Maldives.
Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shraddha Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Kangana Ranaut, John Abraham, and others have joined the 'visit Lakshadweep campaign' under the hashtag ExploreIndianIslands.
What is the Maldives-Lakswadeep controversy?
On January 2, PM Modi visited the Union Territory of Lakshadweep and shared a few pics from the 'exhilarating experience.' Reacting to his post, a few Maldavian politicians passed demeaning and insulting comments on him and India. They also accused India of targeting the nation and claimed that India can never compete with the Maldives in beach tourism.
The tweet stirred a massive backlash on social media, following which many Indians cancelled their scheduled vacation to the nation. Reportedly, the Maldivian government has suspended the three ministers.
