Shyam Benegal Death Reason: Shyam Benegal breathed his last on December 23rd in Mumbai. The legendary filmmaker, who is known and celebrated for his contribution to Indian cinema, breathed his last at the age of 90. His death has been confirmed by his daughter, Pia Benegal. Confirming the news to SCREEN, Pia said, "It is true. Shyam Benegal passed away at 6:30 pm."

According to the several reports, the filmmaker passed away after battling with prolonged illness. The director was unwell for days before he died. He was under treatment for chronic kidney disease at Wockhardt hospital in Mumbai.

Shyam Benegal Movies & Awards

Shyam Benegal is known to deliver cult-classic movies that earned him several accolades. The director started his journey in films with Ankur in 1974 which starred Shabana Azmi and Anant Nag in the lead roles. The movie was widely critically acclaimed and won the National Film Award for the second best feature film. His third film, Nishant, which was released in 1976, earned him a nomination for the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. After which films like Bhumika, Trikal, Junoon, Yatra, Katha Sagar, Mammo, Sardari Begum, Arohan, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero, Well Done Abba, Manthan, Bharat Ek Khoj, Antarnaad, Zubeidaa. His last project was Mujib: The Making of Nation which was released in 2023.

The filmmaker won multiple awards including National Awards 18 times and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution in Indian cinema. He was also honoured with Padma Shri in 1976 and Padma Bhushan, the third highest civillian award in India, in 1991.

Shyam Benegal Personal Life

Shyam Benegal was born in Tirumalagiri in Secunderabad. He was married to Nira Benegal, and is survived by his daughter, Pia.
