Sohum Shah Aims To Redefine Horror In Indian Cinema, Secures Rights Of Veerana, Purani Haveli, Purana Mandir

Sohum Shah is set to expand the horror genre in Indian cinema by remaking classic films from the Ramsay Brothers and developing Tumbbad 2. His vision offers a return to pure horror, moving away from the current trend of horror comedies.

Sohum Shah, the actor-producer who experienced overwhelming success with the re-release of his 2018 horror thriller, Tumbbad, is now setting his sights on expanding the horror genre in Indian cinema. His triumph with Tumbbad, which returned to theaters and became a box-office hit, has propelled him to explore further into the realm of horror. With an eye on reviving classic horror, Sohum has secured the rights to remake notable films from the Ramsay Brothers' collection: Veerana, Purani Haveli, and Purana Mandir.

This move hints at a richer, more nuanced exploration of horror that diverges from the prevalent horror-comedy trend. In his pursuit to enrich the horror genre, Sohum stated in a statement quoted as saying by BollywoodLife, "I have taken the rights of their films Veerana, Purana Haveli and Purana Mandir. So I will be making these films. I have always felt that we can do a lot more with this genre. As a business it makes sense." He further criticized the current trend of horror comedies, advocating for a return to pure horror, which offers more creative freedom and caters to an audience eager for genuine scares. "Jo bhi films ban rahi hain aajkal woh horror comedies ban rahi hain. As a writer you can do whatever you want to do with pure horror movies. People don't want to see the predictable storylines and with horror, you have so much you can do. There is a huge audience out there who want to watch pure horror so business-wise it is time."

Amidst this backdrop of redefining horror, Sohum is also contemplating the creation of a cinematic universe that could intertwine the narratives of Tumbbad and his newly acquired properties. "Well, we will see how that pans out but Tumbbad in itself is a whole universe. And that was the case when we made it back in 2017. There's scope for a prequel, sequel, and backstories of the characters. So yes, that is something that we will look at creating," he shared. This approach suggests a broader vision that transcends typical sequels or remakes, aiming for a more immersive world-building that could captivate audiences with its depth and interconnectedness.

Further amplifying the anticipation among fans, Sohum's slate of upcoming projects includes Tumbbad 2 and Crazxy, a film from Sohum Shah Films set for release on March 7, 2025. The announcement of Crazxy, accompanied by a motion poster, has already sparked considerable interest. As Sohum Shah Films continues to push the boundaries of Indian cinema, the audience is keenly waiting for the next chapter in Sohum's journey, which promises to blend innovation with the nostalgia of classic horror. In summary, Sohum Shah's strategic acquisition of Ramsay Brothers' horror classics and his vision for Tumbbad 2 not only underscores his commitment to the horror genre but also signals a new era for horror films in India. By challenging the status quo and venturing into unexplored territories of pure horror, Sohum is set to redefine what Indian audiences can expect from horror cinema. His approach, focusing on originality and depth, could very well pave the way for a resurgence of serious horror films that captivate and terrify in equal measure.
